Lifehack: USB memory sticks

Sunday 5 October 2008, 4.09pm HKT

Make your USB memory stick returnable. Save a plain text file in your USB memory stick with the filename “owner.txt” at the root path (i.e. not inside any folder or subfolder). This file should contain these words:

The owner of this USB memory device and its contents is:

Name: Mr and Mrs Jack and Jill Smith

Location: Anytown, Anycountry

Telephone: (+123) 1234 5678

Email: jasmith@yourmail.com

[End]

Your location must only be city/town and country. No postcodes or zip codes. Don’t ever put full addresses in there – it invites burglaries!

Meanwhile, attach a plain keychain nametag to the USB stick, with just your name and email.

If you ever lose your USB stick, a finder won’t become a keeper for lack of owner’s information.
