“It must be because they were tortured relentlessly at school by teachers for whom giving a word of encouragement was considered seriously losing face, and then harassed further by the parents when they came home. ‘Only an A? You call that good marks? I want to see double-A double-plus or you don’t need to darken these doors again!’ Whack.

“Do they really think that belittling people, criticising them and punishing them for not being perfect will encourage them to do better? In the case of children, perhaps fear of being taunted and punished will make them buckle down and study every hour they don’t spend at school, but they won’t necessarily learn anything.”
