Sucked into a troll hole on Facebook

Thursday 6 January 2011, 6.13am HKT

Social networking sites are the rage, but getting sucked into a troll trap and be royally pwned on one is not the way to win friends and influence people, especially if you yourself happened to be the one pwning yourself.

I’m not a happy bunny right now.

Super effing unhappy.

I’m now probably on the wrong side of practically everyone I know on Facebook.

I got trolled there.

I blame no one but myself. I saw it coming — and still I walked into it. It was truly my own fault for the outcome.

You have to see the Facebook thread itself to appreciate how it’s being done. And how I was done for.

The thread above is still out of context, but this will do for now. You could only appreciate the full context when you know the previous exchanges I’ve had with the troll — which I can’t do because of space reasons here.

Some people can be really vicious — in fairness, mostly out of stupidity, mostly out of misplaced self-interest. Whether or not the intention was to be vicious, it doesn’t matter — the result is the same.

Of all people, the green commenter is the one person I’d least like to be on the wrong side of.

To the troll, my response is as given in the case of Arkell vs. Pressdram Ltd. (1971) in the law of England and Wales:

The Arkell vs. Pressdram response

You try to be easygoing and nice, and generally being helpful (in the meaning of “helping you to need less help” as Ed Hurst says) — in return you get this kind of behaviour. It’s not the first time this has happened, nor will it be the last, I’m afraid.

Trolls like this one know full well what foreign-brought-up people are like: most likely to speak their minds and not design a response that sounds measured and pleasing to everyone. Knows yours truly would make this kind of remark. And succeeded in forcing this.

My bad that a specific thing in my head now came out as a generalisation. FAIL. SELF-FAIL.

Not a lesson I’m going to forget easily. Not one bit. FAIL.
