Panforte morbido, andato in cielo

IF YOU DON’T READ ITALIAN, it means “Panforte morbido, gone to heaven.”

Last year, I wrote a piece about panforte, an Italian confectionary from the Tuscany region and one of my favourites from childhood. (Click the link to read the story and look at the pictures.)

Well, I just wanted to especially update Hong Kong-based readers that Saporito, the only panforte outlet here, has gone out of business since at least last month.

For the benefit of our friends overseas who are not hip to Hong Kong, shops opening and liquidating in short order are frequent occurrences here.

Shops mostly last three to five years before they kick the bucket, mainly because of the criminally sky-high rents and insanely short lease terms (three years).

And that, my friends, ultimately caused the loss of my beloved panforte.

    I’m sure I’d like it, but I’m a commoner who prefers pie with a tender, thick crust. In my world, there are a couple flavors of sweet wine and then everything else. I prefer beer made almost anywhere but the US (loved common Dutch and German beers) and never with desert. I like decent coffee, but can’t take the really fancy stuff. I like it rather strong and straight, and sometimes I can enjoy an espresso. I’d probably eat panforte with milk or iced tea. Disgusting, no?

    • Oh, gawd, don’t get me started! I’m feeling peckish already. I’m also a big fan of thick-crusted, down-to-earth pies and many other down-to-earth, unpretentious foods (like ploughman’s lunch, etc). Panforte with milk or iced tea – not disgusting at all, but present and correct, very Italian I’d say.
