On medication

Friday 14 October 2011, 2.44am HKT

HEARD coming from the next table:

“… I figured I had disorganised schizophrenia. I wound up going to a psychiatrist, who prescribed me antipsychotic medication.

“Ever since I started taking the medication, my symptoms have gotten dramatically worse.

“Where at first I would simply hear whispers that I knew were about me — and start acting suspicious towards those around me — now I hear full-blown conversations about me, which I know are completely unreal, but seem very real. They are very distracting, intrusive, and lately, violent.”

If the voices insider your head become violent…. Never mind, I think it’s time to find another table, at another cafe, in another town.

    • For a split second, that’s what I thought too. Thankfully, I learnt later on in their conversation that the person lives on Kowloon, which is the other side of the harbour here.

(Hong Kong is Hong Kong Island + Kowloon peninsula separated by Victoria Harbour, in case you wonder – kinda like San Francisco but without the Golden Gate Bridge).
